Historical places in Cyprus

Kyrenia Harbor (Marina) is one of the most popular places to visit in Northern Cyprus. It is located in the center of the port city of Kyrenia. The harbor serves as a docking place for yachts and fishing boats and is surrounded by a splendid Mediterranean atmosphere, with numerous fish and meat restaurants, pubs, and shops.

Kyrenia Castle (Fortress) is a 16th-century castle located in the eastern part of the old harbor of Kyrenia (Girne). Inside the castle walls, there is a chapel and a shipwreck museum displaying the remains of one of the oldest ships in the world. It is situated on a high hill in the center of the port city, offering magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city of Kyrenia. The castle was built in the Moorish architectural style and was constructed by the Persians in the 7th century BCE. Over the years, the castle underwent numerous changes and additions by the Ottoman and Mamluk administrations. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bellapais Monastery is a historic and touristic site located in Northern Cyprus. The monastery is situated on a central hill near the city of Kyrenia and serves as an impressive landmark for visitors from around the world.

Bellapais Monastery, or officially known as the “Abbey of Saint Augustine Bellapais,” was built in the 13th century and is one of the remarkable works of art from the era of the Northern Cypriot emirates. The grand structure and unique architecture of the monastery represent a fusion of Gothic and Mamluk styles. The monastery was founded by the patriarch of the Orthodox Church.

St. Hilarion Castle is one of the impressive sights in Northern Cyprus. It is located on the Kyrenia mountain range and offers magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes.

St. Hilarion Castle was built in the 11th century on the site of an ancient Roman fort. It is named after St. Hilarion, a hermit monk who, according to legend, lived here in the 4th century. The castle served as a defensive fortress and was an important element of Cyprus’ defense system.

Ancient cities: Northern Cyprus is rich in ancient cities such as Soli, Salamis, and Lefkara. In these places, you can see the ruins of ancient cities, amphitheaters, temples, and mosaics.
